The Macleans College Chess team have secured a position in Nationals by placing in the Auckland Secondary Schools Regionals Chess Competition in the A grade division recently.
This was held at Auckland Grammar Schools’ Old Boys Pavillion building on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of September, during national secondary schools tournament week.
The round-robin tournament lasted three days, with 6 teams each completing 5 rounds. With a close game lasting about 2 hours and 4 games per round, it was an exhausting mental effort for all the team members involved.
The Macleans A team came a close second behind Auckland Grammar 1, whom they were tied with on the second-to-last round but came up short by 1 point in the final round. Nevertheless, this qualifies them for a trip to Palmerston North to compete in the NZ Secondary Schools Chess Nationals on the first weekend of the upcoming holidays in late September.
The team consists of Henry Jiang, Andy Chen, Alan Chen, Leo Zhu and Jiapeng Li.
