On the 2nd of March 2023, the second preliminary athletics day was held during periods 1 to 3 at Macleans College.

After many delays such as Severe Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle and awful rain with the anticipation of Tropical Cyclone Judy, the event was a success and the day ran with perfect weather and zero complications.

The girls were on the far field doing throwing events such as discus, javelin, shotput, and a 200m run. Some finalists included Lisé Becker (Hillary; shotput), Faithfulness Saumani (Kupe; discus), and Sara Rekdal (Hillary; discus, javelin).

The boys were on the main field doing running and jumping events such as the 800m run, 100m sprint, high jump, and long jump. Some finalists included Isaiah Muller (Hillary; 100m), Teegan La Grange (Kupe; high jump, long jump), and Jaden Chandler (Kupe; high jump).

Notable finalists include Kaiden Warren (Mansfield) and Vanya De Melo (Batten).

Warren made seven finals for 100m sprint, 200m run, discus, high jump, long jump, and triple jump over the course of Day 1 and Day 2, including after school events. De Melo made seven finals as well for 100m spring, 200m run, 400m run, javelin, discus, long jump, and triple jump.

During the day, principal Mr Hargreaves walked around the grounds and said, “it was good to see everyone get stuck in.”

Congratulations to all the students across the houses who made finals for their events. They will end the annual Macleans Athletics Days by competing on the 7th of March at Lloyd Elsemore Park.

Thank you also to all the teachers who made the event possible.
