During Week 4 of Term 3, the school’s orchestras and bands participated in the annual KBB Music Festival at Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Mary’s-in-Holy Trinity.

The orchestras and bands attended their competition sessions as planned. On Monday was the Sinfonietta; on Wednesday were the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra; on Thursday were the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Stage Band.

These students would attend periods one to three, leaving period three early to catch the bus to the venue where they would stay for the rest of their session.

A few of these orchestras and bands also performed at the Macleans College Gala Concert, which you can read here.

The public were able to attend these sessions at a discounted price than the gala concerts held later in the week.

On the 12th of August, the Macleans Symphony Orchestra played in the 6.30 pm gala concert. The concert sold out by the morning and even those who tried to get door sales had to wait.

The final KBB music festival of my years here at Macleans was no short of a spectacle, both Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra reclaim their golds, and the music was brilliant, especially that on gala night. Up the castle!

Matthew Shih (Batten), member of the Symphony Orchestra

The Macleans College Symphony Orchestra were the first to perform in the evening among various other orchestras and jazz bands. They played a selection of songs from The Phantom of the Opera written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and arranged by Calvin Custer.

The three-hour-long evening concert also featured vocal soloists in various groups, such as the Diocesan Symphony Orchestra and the Sancta Maria College Big Band.

At the end of the concert, Macleans College secured two golds with their Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra.

Congratulations on the gold awards achieved by the instrumental groups. A lot of work goes into preparing for the KBB Music Festival, so these golds were well-earned.
